Water Wastage

PICX: Bapu Viswanath
The rising mercury seems to be taking its toll on everything, water pipes included. The past two weeks have seen a spate of bursts and leaks in pipelines across Mumbai city.
Bapu Viswanath was on his way from Goregaon to Tardeo on Monday afternoon, when he saw this column of water shooting up into the sky from a pipe burst at Bandra. Vishwanath, a Lalbaug resident, promptly took a picture and sent it to us.
According to retired water department officials, around 15 to 20 per cent of Mumbai’s water supply is wasted due to leakages.
